The Sharon Health Department confirmed a human case of Powassan virus was found in the town.

The virus is transmitted through infected ticks.

Officials said most people exposed to Powassan virus do not feel sick, but may cause others to become severely ill with meningitis.

Symptoms of disease usually begin between one week and one month after the bite of an infected tick.

Officials are urging residents to take precautions to prevent tick bites.

Powassan virus was reported in Rhode Island back in February.
