Controversy erupted over the death of jailed gangster-turned-politician Mukhtar Ansari after his son claimed that the former MLA was subjected to "slow poisoning" in prison. Ansari (60), who has been in prison since 2005, died of cardiac arrest in Uttar Pradesh's Banda on Thursday. His postmortem was conducted on Friday.

Meanwhile, the Uttar Pradesh Police today issued prohibitory orders across the state to prevent any law and order situation. Mukhtar Ansari, a five-time MLA from Mau, had over 60 criminal cases pending against him.

    Mukhtar Ansari's son Umar Ansari claimed that the gangster-turned-politician was subjected to "slow poisoning" at Banda jail. A similar claim was also made by Ansari's brother and Ghazipur MP Afzal Ansari. The charge was denied by the authorities.

  • Chief Judicial Magistrate's court in Banda has asked an additional Chief Judicial Magistrate to conduct a probe into Mukhtar Ansari's death and submit the report in a month.

  • Last week, the former five-time MLA from Mau submitted an application in Barabanki court, saying he was given some "poisonous substance" along with his food. Ansari claimed that on March 19, his nerves and limbs started paining after he consumed the food.

  • Mukhtar Ansari's post-mortem was conducted in Banda today, and the process was videographed. Sources said his viscera was preserved. Meanwhile, preparations were underway for his cremation at the Mohhamadabad burial ground.

  • Mukhtar Ansari's son Umar Ansari today wrote to the Banda District Magistrate, demanding that the postmortem of his father be done by doctors from AIIMS Delhi. In his letter, Ansari wrote that his family doesn't trust the medical system of Banda.

  • The gangster's family today approached the Allahabad High Court for the parole of Abbas Ansari, Mukhtar Ansari's son lodged in Kasganj jail.

  • Mukhtar Ansari was brought to the Rani Durgavati Medical College in Banda from the district jail in "an unconscious state" on Thursday. A team of nine doctors attended to him, but he died of cardiac arrest.

  • On Tuesday, Mukhtar Ansari was hospitalised for around 14 hours after he complained of abdominal pain.
