Maryland Governor Wes Moore is not committing to any timeline, including when the debris will be cleared, after the deadly collapse of the Key Bridge.

But the governor told reporters at an evening news conference Thursday that he wants it to happen quickly and as safely as possible to help bring closure to the families of the victims.

When the cargo ship struck the bridge, it presumably cost the lives of six construction workers who were on the road on the bridge filling potholes when the bridge collapsed early Tuesday morning.

Moments before the impact there was a mayday from the ship, jumpstarting the Maryland Transportation Authority Police authority. Police jumped into action shutting down the bridge and the traffic.

"I've spoken to these officers and they each told me that they had approximately 25 to 30 cars behind them. That's almost 60 people that would have been on that bridge and fallen in the water had they not stopped the traffic,” said Jim Kruszynski, president of the MDTA Police union.

But the officers were unable to get to the construction workers in time. The workers were presumed dead.

At the news conference, Rep. Kweisi Mfume, who is part of the Maryland delegation that represents the district where the incident happened, shared his thoughts.

“Allow me to be redundant..it could have been any of us anytime, anywhere in a situation that we could not have predicted. And so we continue to send our condolences to those families,” said Mfume.

Governor Moore also announced a hotline number for unemployment insurance for workers affected by the collapse. The number for that hotline is 667-930-5989.
